  1. HISTORY OF SRI MAHA MARIAMMAN TEMPLE PORT DICKSON

    With the coming of British to Malaya and it’s rule ,the Indians from south India came and settled in Malaya .The Indians believe in the Hindu saying “Don’t live in a country where there is no temple”. They did not forget that and built a temple where they could their religion, language, art ,culture were upheld according to their capacity.
    During the time the Hindu people of Port Dickson felt the need of temple and in 1923 and they built for Mother Shakthi a Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at the site of the merdeka stadium. The government under British rule felt the need of place so in 1930 it was rebuilt at the present site at Jalan Lama(before known as milk coffee road)with the help of the engineer Mr.Thamothiran Pillay. Now the temple is situated in an half acre land. This is the biggest temple in negeri Sembilan. It was developed further step by step by donations gathered.
    Dato’ K.Padnabhan donated RM10000 from the government. Dato’ M. Muthupalaniappan from rantau district donated RM18000. Workers union from Johnson co.senawang contributed floor tiles for the temple.

    RAJA GOPURAM
    At the entrance of temple lies the Rajagopuram majestically. It’s foundation was laid in 1978 and the stone laying ceremony was done by assistant Health Minister Datuk K. Pathmanaban. In 1981 piling work was started. The architecture in the temple was done by sculptors from India and Sri Lanka. Ambal vimanam, parihara moorthigal and vimanangal was carried out by head Mr. Rathakrishnan.
    The expenditure came to 2 ½ million ringgit. The government donated RM25000. The next came from the public contribution and howell company donation.



    OLD TEMPLE
    The old temple was renovated in 1970. In 1971, kumbabhishegam took place. In 1978, rajagopuram works began. As a result of heavy piling construction,it sshock the surrounding. When it rains, it started to leak appeared at the moolastanam. Cracks also came about here and there. The temple management felt the need for construction and renewing the temple. Thus came the new temple.

    THE NEW TEMPLE
    The grand new temple donation began in 1983. The old temple was demolished and piling works was started in the same year. The work was carried out by the people in the spirit of gotong royong free service reudered under the Head of the temple. Contractor Mr Tan Liew from Port Dickson quoted the cost of the construction at Rm 70000. But at the end out of generosity, he took only Rm 45000 and donated Rm25000 to the temple.
    After piling work. Mr . Raman and 8 sculptors came from thevakotai to perform work at gopuram.Mr. N Balu was head for part of the work. A total of 260 statues were made. The height of this gopuram is 70 feet. Dato’Pathmanaban contributed RM10000 from the government for this 2 ½ million gopuram. Mr Muhibah Maniam donated RM 10000 for the construction of the front door.
    MIC President Dato’Samy Velu donated RM 50000 from the government. In 1986, the rajagopuram was completed and it stands majestic today.






    ANTHIRATHI MANDABAM(KARUMAKIRI MANDABAM)
    The hindus did their emakriyai at Port Dickson beach ,wherever they wished and also faced problem. The temple committee to overcome these problems decided to built an anthirathi mandabam. A suitable place was sought along the seaside. Mr. Ponniah, Dato K.Pathmanaban helped in this venture. In 1982 Ahmad Bakri in district administration gave a ¼ acre at 1 ½ mile Jalan Pantai Port Dickson.
    The place was low and undulating. Sathyam Engineer helped to file it with earth. Dato’K. Pathmanaban donated RM 10000 from government and piling work began Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Kuala Lumpur also helped by donating RM 40000. The total cost of building the antherathy mandabam was RM 68000 . the public gave RM 5000. The temple management committee contributed RM13000

  2. RATHA KALA MANDABAM
    In 1976 temple head Mr Poobala Pillay put effort to built a mandabam for marriage purpose and temple related activities. Mr A. Poniah gave permission Bharat Company from India who came to work at the Power Station contributed roof and ceiling within two months Hindu Youth completed the building ,acquiring necessary cement.It was named Bharatha Kala Mandabam in memory Bharath Company. It was opened by Mr.Sahadan, Temple activities were carried at here.

  3. TEMPLE LAND
    1/2 Acre land in Kg Chokra was used to build 3 houses,costing RM26000. Rental was RM300 per month.Mr.Ponniah helped to acquired thus land opening ceremony was done by Mr.Sahadan.

    TAMIL SCHOOL LAND
    The land was let to the school forRM10 rental in 1947 by Tamil Hindu Sangam.

  4. FUNERAL SERVICE
    Funeral service for those without relatives began in 1985. Temple undertook the expediture for this purpose.

    Funeral Van
    People made use of Chinese van or turned to Mr H.Govindasamy for this purpose. Sometimes, they faced difficulty. Mr K. Pathmanaban came to buy a van and contribute RM10000 and remaining RM5000 was from people’s contribution.




    Hindu Burial Ground
    There is hindu burial ground at 2nd Mile,Jalan Pantai Port Dickson. It is taken care by the temple management. In 1976,more jungle was cleared for burial ground. But still more place is required for burial.

    Crematorium
    Crematorium was built at 1 ½ Mile Seremban Road. Since it was situated near housing area, it was closed down. Effort was put to find a new suitable place. A new crematorium is going to be built by the Temple trustees at Sua Betong Port Dickson in 2011.

    Bharatha Group
    In 1979 Sri Maha Mariamman Management wanted to promote it,so young girls attended dance classes under a teacher Mrs Suganthy Raju from Seremban for sometime. Later Mrs Rajeswari conducted dance class at Sunshini Camp and are requested to start a class at temple for 9 girls. It’s advisor was Mr Poobalapillai. The girls participated in various competition and won many prizes. They also participated in all the functions at temple.

  5. Sangeetha Group
    The temple head Mr Poobalapillai got Mr Balan and in 1976 with the help of Mr R Tharmalingam from Kuala Lumpur began the thevaram class for many students. They participated at Navarathiri Poojai activities yearly Sangeetha class was also started for children from surrounding area.

    Temple Ratham
    The temple management felt the need for a new ratham,since the existing one was very old. Mr H.Govindasamy agreed to pay a large amount and the rest were from temple committee who paid RM1000 each. Mr H. Govindasamy, Mr.P.Selvaraj and Mr.P.Paul Pandian were incharge of getting the temple ratham. The Temple Ratham came from Sri Lanka. It was made by Aachari Sitpa Raja Sigamani Isthapathy A Jeevarathnam and co-workers. Its height was 16 feet,width 9 and circumference 27 feet. The workmanship was beautiful and well-crafted. In the year 2009&2010 under the Temple Head Mr.V Pannirselvam,the temple continued its activities diligently.


    Giving Aid
    The temple aid helped people who lost their homes in fire by providing food, furniture and money. Gave help to single mother during Deepavali. Trustee Dato’T.Rajagopalu sponsored gifts for ladies who contributed service to temple. We also helped in getting aid for 5 poor families from State Minister. The management also helped to bury the orphans who passed away. It also sponsored books for Port Dickson for Port Dickson Tamil School students. Temple members helped and supported in Bagan Pinang by election.

  6. Renovation Related To Temple Structure
    Temple office in bad shape was rebuilt. Some floor tiling work was done in open area. Awning was put up over it. A small chariot used for ulvithi and table were done for temple daily use. Hand washing place has been renovated and the Rajagopuram has been cleaned and fixed with new lights.

    Poojai At Temple
    Navarathiri, Saraswathy Poojai and Ayyapan Poojai are conducted by temple with public support. Ayyapan Poojai are conducted by our temple head Mr Pannir Selvam. He got the Ayyapan statue from India and it was installed in the temple for past 8 years at temple.

    In Memory Of:
    Prayers were conducted at temple for the Late Heads of the temple Mr G. Poobala Pillay and Mr G. Balakrishnan. Temple provided refreshment for Tamil Elango Club as prayers were done for late poet Mr Nyancedasan. It also gave garlands,etc to temple member who passed away.

    Media Involvement
     Movie shooting was done in temple by director from India.
     Astro TV programme was shot in temple to let the public know about the history of this temple.
     Temple provided hi-tea for Yoga Courses conducted by Astro Viluthugal. Various temple activities were published.



    Donations
     Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan donated RM5000 for temple fund.
     Donations of RM20000 was given by Menteri Sumber Manusia Malaysia for temple fund.
     Temple donated RM500 to Sunggala Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and RM200 to Lydia Sharen for medical expenses.
     MIC President Dato’G.Palanivel donated Sri Vinayagar Lamp to the temple.

  7. GRAVEYARD AND KARMAKRIYA AREA
     Cleaning and house- keeping has been done at at 2nd mile graveyard.
     Signages have been placed in the karmakriya area to advice people to throw pots and dhoties only at designated places.
     A Pro- Team Committee for Hindu Burial Ground was effected for taking care of its affairs effectively.



    COURSES

     Committee members attended Majlis Penyampaian Sumbangan& Ramah Mesra at Klana Resort,Seremban.
     Temple staff attended induction courses organised by Ministry of Human Resources at Kuala Lumpur.

    KUMBHABISHEGAM RENOVATION
    Kumbabishegam renovation has begun. When completed kumbhabishegam will be held at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Port Dickson from the support and kind contribution made by devotees and with blessings from Amman.
    MEMBERSHIP AT TEMPLE
    Life Membership has increased by figure 138 in registration and temple because a leader in gabungan Kuil Hindu Negeri Sembilan.

    MAINTENANCE RELATED TO TEMPLE

     New curtains were made for Arthe Mandabam and Alangara Mandabam.
     Pipeline system has been repaired and changed in antherathy and temple.
     Water leak repaires has been done at Vasantha Mandabam.
     Houses in Kg.Chokra has been repaired and rented out.


    TEMPLE MANDABAM
    We have received the grant(Tamil School Land) on 15 October 2011 and the proposed plan of the hall do be built at this side.
